Living in a dream country and being able to base myself back in South Canterbury now is the perfect set up.

Born and raised in Timaru by my wonderful parents Kevin and Glennis Smith who live here, enabled a fantastic upbringing.  I have two sisters Tania and Jaimee who live with their families which are now in Wanaka and makes for great holidaying adventures.  Growing up as a kid it was all about the great outdoors.  My parents introduced us to many hobbies and sport was a big part of our lives.  I represented South Canterbury for 10years playing Hockey all over NZ and Touch Rugby also.  I believe today that playing high level sport sets you up for resilience in tough times and able to cope better under pressure.  It also sets your personal values around being trustworthy, reliable, strong commitment and excellence in delivery.

For schooling I went to Grantlea Primary School and then on to Mountainview High School to gain UE. I was undecided what I wanted to be or do and felt that University at the time left me feeling the option weren't there.  So I decided to do a IT and Admin Course at Timaru Polytechnic as a bit of a gap year and gain the necessary basics of admin skills.  The School holidays were spent working at Timaru Milling Co in the Factory and Lab to get some pocket money and work experience.  From there I was lucky enough to kick start an amazing career.

My first job in 1994 was in the Technical field working as a Lab Technician for Timaru Milling Co - Goodman Fielder.  Timaru Milling was one of the first companies around back then to have gained ISO:9001 Certification.  This was an area I was keen to get into as all the Goodmanfielder Companies wanted to roll-out ISO 9001 and I was going to be part of it.

I transferred to Bluebird Foods in Auckland in which I trained and worked as a Microbiologist for a year, then into Sensory Technology and part of the ISO:9001/ HACCP team working towards their certification.

After eight years working in the Food Industry I decided a change was good and moved onto the Chemical Industry working in Quality Management and Colour Chemistry for six years.  I then moved onto Plastic Injection Moulding, Health Care products and again implementing the required ISO Standards and Health & Safety Systems.

After four years in Plastics, I was then approached to go Consulting.  From there Kylie Smith Consulting was formed.  My first big project was working as a Quality Engineer on a large Pressure Intregrity Project based working between two Contact Energy sites. This was great to be able to compile Governance QA reporting and step up another level again.

After this project my son Blake was born in 2011 and we headed back to Canterbury to be closer to home.  We looked after tower cranes to help deconstruct buildings in the Red Zone after the CHCH Earthquake, so we found plenty to keep busy on the work front.  After a year we moved back to Timaru to find stability to give Blake a great life around his family.  I picked up plenty of work after going to a few business after five socials through SC Chamber and felt spoilt for choice.  I was then offered full time employment competitive with my rates so I took those opportunities also.

Notable experiences was streamlining information for the merger of PrimePort and Tauranga, taking on several Public Record Act projects at the South Canterbury District Health Board assessing records, Rolling out SharePoint, Open Source OpenText and structuring Corporate information for various large companies.  Transitioning companies through to the latest ISO Standards including Health and Safety.

I feel like I have had an amazing career so far and I have taken every opportunity and ran with it.  I have consulted and worked in the Composites, Engineering, Power Generation, Power Transmission, Dairy and Civil Construction sectors which has been a fantastic opportunity.

My most recent distinguished qualification is holding a Diploma in Business Management & Leadership.
